How to modify the 460 Ford oil system for racing.


The stock oiling system for the 460 is quite adaquate for most street and mild racing applications. It does have a potential problem in that, with the exception of the #1 main and #1 cam bearings, oil for all the crankshaft and camshaft bearings is routed through the right lifter gallery first. The problem arises if the engine loses a pushrod or rocker arm. If this happens the lifter is usually kicked out the top of its bore and oil pressure immediately drops to zero. This is especially true if the ejected lifter is on the right side. (See diagram of stock oiling system below.)



The modifications we used are pictured below. Please be advised that there is extensive drill work involved and the block must be completely stripped to do these operations, including removal of all oil passage plugs and cam bearings. On the other hand, there is nothing that most mechanically inclined persons with some basic tools and a ½" drill can't do.
